Our first stop on Friday afternoon was the Bauhaus museum &#8211; a small but unique little space with treasures from the first years of the school&#8217;s existence. Unfortunately the Bauhaus school was forced to leave Weimar after the Nazi party gained power in the state of Th\u00fcringen in 1924.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.naraelle.net\/chidberlin11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/IMG_2339.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-194\" title=\"Buchenwald entrance\" src=\"http:\/\/www.naraelle.net\/chidberlin11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/IMG_2339-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.naraelle.net\/chidberlin11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/IMG_2343.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-195\" title=\"Jedem das seine\" src=\"http:\/\/www.naraelle.net\/chidberlin11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/IMG_2343-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.naraelle.net\/chidberlin11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/IMG_2350.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-197\" title=\"Jewish memorial\" src=\"http:\/\/www.naraelle.net\/chidberlin11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/IMG_2350-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This opened a difficult chapter in Weimar&#8217;s history, and on Saturday we visited the nearby site of Buchenwald concentration camp.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.naraelle.net\/chidberlin11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/IMG_2345.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-196\" title=\"the view\" src=\"http:\/\/www.naraelle.net\/chidberlin11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/IMG_2345-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.naraelle.net\/chidberlin11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/IMG_2345-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.naraelle.net\/chidberlin11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/IMG_2345-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.naraelle.net\/chidberlin11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/IMG_2345.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The most striking thing one finds on entering the camp is the view: the camp is set in the middle of the forest (<em>Buche<\/em> means &#8220;beech&#8221; and <em>Wald<\/em> means &#8220;woods&#8221;), on a hill that allows a view across the valley. The prisoners named it in remembrance of Goethe&#8217;s trips to this same forest. It&#8217;s thought that about 7,ooo people died during this time in the camp&#8217;s history, and they were buried in unmarked graves in the woods surrounding the site. Because Th\u00fcringen became part of East Germany, the deaths were not acknowledged during the Cold War. The fall of the Berlin Wall finally allowed the victims&#8217; families to speak up and publicly remember their relatives.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.naraelle.net\/chidberlin11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/IMG_2434.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-217\" title=\"belltower\" src=\"http:\/\/www.naraelle.net\/chidberlin11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/IMG_2434-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.naraelle.net\/chidberlin11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/IMG_2434-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.naraelle.net\/chidberlin11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/IMG_2434-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.naraelle.net\/chidberlin11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/IMG_2434.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Soviets left another highly visible legacy: a huge memorial to the camp&#8217;s liberation, on a hill overlooking Weimar.
