(You probably think we&#8217;re just obsessed with him, but believe us &#8211; he truly was great!) We began at the St. Nikolaikirche near the city center. It was begun according to plans by Schinkel, but finished by his student Ludwig Persius.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.naraelle.net\/chidberlin11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/IMG_1983.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-162\" title=\"Rebuilding the palace\" src=\"http:\/\/www.naraelle.net\/chidberlin11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/IMG_1983-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.naraelle.net\/chidberlin11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/IMG_1983-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.naraelle.net\/chidberlin11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/IMG_1983-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.naraelle.net\/chidberlin11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/IMG_1983.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Berlin isn&#8217;t the only city that is rebuilding past monuments &#8211; here you can see that Potsdam is also busily rebuilding its royal palace (across from the Nikolaikirche), as a home for the state parliament. Meanwhile, East German buildings on the other side of the square are slated for demolition and replacement.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.naraelle.net\/chidberlin11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/IMG_2005.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-165\" title=\"through the woods\" src=\"http:\/\/www.naraelle.net\/chidberlin11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/IMG_2005-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.naraelle.net\/chidberlin11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/IMG_2010.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-166\" title=\"Roman Baths from afar\" src=\"http:\/\/www.naraelle.net\/chidberlin11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/IMG_2010-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A trek across Potsdam and through Sanssouci park brought us to another Schinkel site, this one built for a very elite audience &#8211; the crown prince.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.naraelle.net\/chidberlin11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/IMG_2019.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-167\" title=\"Charlottenhof\" src=\"http:\/\/www.naraelle.net\/chidberlin11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/IMG_2019-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.naraelle.net\/chidberlin11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/IMG_2021.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-168\" title=\"bench\" src=\"http:\/\/www.naraelle.net\/chidberlin11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/IMG_2021-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Schinkel built a tiny summer palace (really the size of a summer <em>home<\/em>) for the prince, who was a prolific artist and designer himself.
